PrEP Consultative Meeting
Atlanta, GA
May 2, 2008

Fifty-five colleagues from multiple research disciplines participated in a one-day meeting on May 2, 2008 to identify key scientific questions to be addressed in future prevention research on pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for prevention of HIV. Participants represented the scientific, advocacy, pharmaceutical and funding communities. The meeting was hosted and organized by the HIV Prevention Trials Network with support from a Cooperative Agreement from the NIH/NIAID.

The six objectives of this consultative meeting were:

  • To provide an update on effectiveness trials;

  • To review mouse and sub-human primate data from the past year, with particular emphasis on intermittent dosing;

  • To review the pharmacology data for the various drugs and formulations used for PrEP;

  • To determine what study designs should be considered for feasibility studies (adherence/PK measures in different populations, evaluating sexual behavior patterns);

  • To assess surveillance data for HIV resistance; and

  • To discuss new drugs or combinations to consider in “next generation” PrEP.
